Matthias Wilm obtained his MD and his PhD as a Physicist from the University of Münster in Germany. He spend his PhD research at the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) in Heidelberg, Germany and contributed to the development to use mass spectrometry to identify and sequence proteins. After his PhD and a short post-doctoral phase he became group leader at the same institute and helped to establish the first systematic technique for the characterisation of protein complexes (functional proteomics), approaches which are now widely used in Systems Biology. He introduced the “All Ion Fragmentation” scan as a promising multiplexed technique to detect molecules with a specific signature. In 2008 he moved to the University College Dublin as a Professor for Analytical Sciences.
